The Diocese of Durgapur seeks to share the manifold blessings of our Lord through the Healing Ministry. Jesus' Healing Ministry involved holistic healing which resulted in physical, emotional, mental and spiritual cleansing leading to healing. To this end we seek to provide state-of-the-art medical facilities for those who cannot afford private hospitals and doctors.
The Good Shepherd Eye Clinic is a project of the women of DWFCS (Diocesan Women’s Fellowship for Christian Service), Diocese of Durgapur, CNI. It has turned into a blessing for the underprivileged, socially oppressed and poorest of poor people living Below Poverty Line in the seven districts of the State of West Bengal in India.
The clinic inside the Campus of Diocesan Bhavan, headquarters of the Diocese of Durgapur, is situated in an industrial region. Here the factories attract a lot of migrant labourers, who live in the poorest conditions, in unhygienic city slums. The people working in the factories are very vulnerable to health issues and most of the time can’t afford to see a good doctor. They resort to quacks, which, most of the time, causes permanent damage.
On Sunday the 30th of June 2013, the clinic conducted its first set of Cataract Surgeries. Dr. Phalguni Mitra, a renowned eye surgeon, conducted surgeries on 7 female and 2 male patients. Dr. Mitra was assisted in the OT by Mr. Alok Dutta, Optometrist, Mr. Pintu Das and Mr. Raja Moses.
That was the first step towards this dream which has been success ongoing. Today we have regular patients and patients who come from far to avail themselves of our excellent medical care. We also organise health camps and eye-testing camps to assess needs and provide medical care accordingly.
Till date we have screened 1000 patients and operated near about 500 cataract cases.
